Audio, video and similar electronic apparatus must adhere to EN 60065:2014 for presumption of conformity with Low Voltage Directive

The 8th edition of EN 60065, published in 2014, specifies safety requirements for audio, video and similar electronic apparatus.

The DOW (date by which the standard becomes mandatory, and supersedes all conflicting standards) was set at November 17, 2017. This means that from November 17, 2017, all EU-bound products falling within its scope must be tested and certified for conformity with the new EN 60065:2014 standard.

The standard is harmonized according to the RTTED (1999/5/EC), LVD (2006/95/EC) and GPSD (2001/95/EC) directives. Audio/video products within the scope of the RTTED or LVD directives must be in compliance with the standard in order to carry the CE mark. TÜV Rheinland offers product assessments against the standard that minimize your financial risk, because if found to not be in compliance your product might face a sales ban. There is also a risk of financial penalties being imposed by European authorities if your company markets a product that does not comply with statutory requirements.

EN 60065:2014 applies to electronic apparatus designed to be powered from mains, supply apparatus, batteries, or remote power feeds and intended for the reception, generation, recording, or reproduction of audio, video and associated signals. It also applies to apparatus designed to be used exclusively in combination with the above-mentioned apparatus. This standard primarily concerns apparatus intended for household and similar general use but which may also be used in places of public assembly such as schools, theaters, places of worship, and the workplace. Professional apparatus intended for use as described above is also covered, unless falling specifically within the scope of other standards.

EN 60065:2002+A1:2006 +A11:2008+A2:2010 +A12:2011, which applied for certain apparatus that now fall within the scope of EN 60065:2014, will cease to be valid as of November 17, 2017. All existing certificates must be updated to EN 60065:2014 before the DOW date.

The principal changes in this edition as compared with the 7th edition are as follows:

  • new requirements for coin/button cell batteries
  • new requirements for portable secondary sealed cells and batteries (other than button)
  • new requirements for non-floor standing televisions likely to be used in the home and weighing over 7 kg
  • addition of requirements for LEDs
  • requirements for creepage distances are aligned with IEC 60950-1
  • change in optocoupler requirements
  • new requirements for wall and ceiling mounting means
  • all notes have been reviewed to comply with the new directives
