Certification on the New EMC directive (2014/30/EU)

On 29 March 2014, the European Commission has published a recast on the EMC directive. The updated EMC directive is numbered 2014/30/EU and it came into force on 18 April 2014. The previous EMC directive 2004/108/EC will be repealed on 20 April 2016.

Compliance with relevant EU legislation, including the EMC directive, is usually demonstrated by testing according to harmonized standards which are European standards developed by a recognized European Standards Organization: CEN, CENELEC, or ETSI. The references of harmonized standards are published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).

Until now the latest OJEU has only been updated for the previous EMC directive (2004/108/EC). That means there is no OJEU, hence harmonized standards, published for the New EMC directive (2014/30/EU) yet. Manufacturers declaring compliance of their product according to the new EMC directive (2014/30/EU) with the harmonized standards in the existing OJEU do not comply with the current mandatory legal requirement and their product can be rejected at customs. Any certification on the New EMC directive (2014/30/EU), based upon the harmonized standards in the existing OJEU, is misleading and should not be used for declaration of conformity.
